The Iconic Game Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Bridged the Gap Among Rock Generations

It has been two decades after the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to become a rock star. Figuratively speaking, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's mastered the epic lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to a song. Each riff mimicked particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix had already tried its hand in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise that had a significant influence on numerous of the artists included, introducing classic groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, remembers the early financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was the number of parents reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the music they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Irish group one featured act included Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game brought older hits to the forefront: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, however when it was featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the band's debut album remained not available in the US, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized game editions that focused on each band’s catalogue and related lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It moved well over 500,000 units in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through the game – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. The song is challenging enough on expert mode, not to mention played at double speed and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band previously wrapped up a profitable run when their hit was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I recall the record label informing us that our selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before top acts at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it threatened to eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “In the past I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star on the stage. From day one, the co-founders believed humans have a natural urge to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority installments came out over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles such as DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, and there’s expectations of something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has entered production on their first music game. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace another game following the classic?

“We thought such titles might become similar to sports games where you can releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
