The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
