The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
