Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
